IS CULTURE AN INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY?
By Heidi Ehlers

If you believe it is, there must be something better you can do with your time than reading what you already know.  And you probably already behave in alignment with this belief.

But if you believe culture is something that is handed to you, or something you walk into, then perhaps we should talk.

I believe it is the responsibility of each person in the tribe "culture" to bring their best self to work every day.  Whether that tribe is a team, an army, a caucus, or a boardroom.

I believe the "give me the culture" type of thinking ultimately leads to feeling of powerlessness.  Suddenly you're in a trap, you have no power to impact.

Whereas "I can impact the culture" thinking causes a number of minute immeasurable shifts that ultimately lead to one seismic shift that you will have set in motion.

Here are 25 things you can do, starting right now:

1)    Tell the truth.  If you don't agree with something, say so.
2)    Do What you Say You're Going to Do When you Say You're Going to Do it.
3)    Leave your Personal Problems at the Front Door.
4)    Put your cup in the dishwasher
5)    Show up to meetings 5 minutes early.
6)    Bring paper.
7)    Bring a pen.
8)    Write your career plan.
9)    Straighten the magazines in reception.  Throw out the ones that are more than 6 weeks old.
10)  Share inspiring information or news.
11)  Shave.
12)  Make it your responsiblity to learn things that will make you better at your job.
13)  Take courses to become a better presenter.
14)  Listen to music when you need to focus.
15)  Stick out your chest.
16)  Read as many business magazines as creativity magazines.
17)  Be respectful toward other people's time.
18)  Show up ready.
19)  Make lists.
20)  Make deadlines.
21)  Forget whose job it is.
22)  Ask not.
23)  Remember everything your grandfather told you about hard work.  Then do it.
24)  Remember, it's called "work"for a reason.
25)  Find reasons to say "thank you" more often, and stop creating reasons to say "sorry".

Great list, Heidi - but where's "Whistle while you work"? Number 8 on your list is, I think, the most important of the many lessons you taught me. It's something you got me doing a couple of years ago, and I haven't stopped adding, deleting, and revising since then. Such a difference it's made in my life - adds focus, drive, and self-motivation. Very difficult to get where you want to be without a map and a schedule. It makes me more confident in what I'm doing, which makes me a better employee (and person in general!), which positively impacts those around me. The best way to improve culture? Physician, heal thyself.

It's all about getting "Back To Basics", cause things are heating up out there!!! And using extra punctuation when you write, cause that means your saying something exciting... and YOU SHOULD PEPPER IN SOME CAPITALIZATION CAUSE NOW IT"S NOT ONLY EXCITING BUT YOUR SCREAMING IT NOW SO THAT MAKES IT XTRA XCITING!!!!!!!!!! Also spell things wrong when using words that start with "ex" Now EVERYONE GO HUG a complete stranger!!!!! I LUV YOU ALL!!!!!

I couldn't agree more, and I really like this list. I think I'd add to Heidi and Kent's list and include the following three things: 1. Listen. 2. Share. and; 3. Enjoy yourself, you only live once and your workplace is where you spend a lot of time so you might as well like it.

Here are some additional items to Heidi's list: Trust your inner wisdom Trust the process of life (and work) Release the past and forgive everyone The point of power is always in the present moment Every thought you think is creating your future Go beyond other people’s fears and limitations Listen to your body’s messages Look at every day with fresh eyes Your appearance reflects you love of yourself, so dress up Surround yourself with positive people Ask for help when you need it
